You know what they say! One is nice, but two is better. That works for chocolate, ice cream, books, etc… The list is endless.
Maybe it doesn’t work with everything, certainly not when it comes to paying bills, but when it comes to fantasy erotic romance, why the heck not.
Ménage a trois romances are very popular with readers. The question is why? Personally, I think it’s the sheer fantasy involved with having two (or more) men totally focused on a woman’s pleasure. Four hands touching her, two mouths kissing her. Is it me or is it getting hotter in here?
Like many erotic romance writers, I’ve written a ménage a trois. Why? Mostly because it was a challenge. How do you create a story or a world where readers will accept that two or more men sharing a woman is acceptable? Maybe even the norm. Then there are the technical difficulties of dealing with all those hands and legs and arms. Everything has to work together without it seeming clinical. After all, this is romance.
And that’s another thing to remember. It is all about romance. These men don’t just want the heroine physically, they want her in their lives. They have an emotional connection that is deepened by the physical one. To me, that’s the most important aspect of all.
My first attempt at a ménage a trois/fantasy romance was Christina’s Tapestry. The response to this book exceeded all my expectations. Readers really seemed to connect with Christina and the men who both wanted to claim her. I set this story in the mythical world of Javara, which is much like Medieval Europe. A magical tapestry brings the heroine there and she has only three days to decide if she wishes to stay or to return home. But while she’s there two sexy warriors will use all their sexual skill to convince her to stay.I’d planned it to be a stand-alone book, but knew that was going to be impossible. The Bakra brothers cried out for a book or two (Bakra Bride and Woven Dreams). I couldn’t seem to stop going back to this world. Book four was even more of a challenge as there were three men involved instead of two. (Threads of Destiny) *g* But I love a challenge.
Embroidered Fantasies is the fifth book in the Tapestries series and it was released from Ellora’s Cave on March 26th.
Blurb:
Roxanne Sykes is a divorced waitress, trying to carve a life for herself after escaping an abusive marriage. Her quiet life is shattered when her ex-husband finds her. Before he can harm her, a magical tapestry whisks her away. She finds herself in a strange land, in the presence of a man straight from her erotic dreams.
Radnor Craddock’s life has been one of violence and brutality. He never expected the tapestry of Javara lore would bring a woman to him and his brother, Sednar. They only have three days to try to convince Roxanne to stay, and both use their considerable seductive skills to do so.
The erotic encounters are like nothing Roxanne has ever experienced. Yet she cannot trust her judgment. After all, she married a man who abused her. Then there are the dark hints and innuendoes of the Craddocks’ violent pasts. But when her ex-husband threatens her, Radnor and Sednar risk their lives to save her. Will she leave them? Or stay and claim these wounded warriors as her own?
I’ll probably return to this world again, but they’re not the only ménage a trois stories I’ve penned. Amethyst Moon and Amethyst Dreams are connected books that feature heroines who are archaeologists. They each travel to an alternate world and into the arms of two sexy males.
And then there is Three Swords, One Heart, a fantasy adventure with a kick-ass heroine and two cursed warriors searching for the one woman who can set them free.
Who knows, maybe one day I’ll write a contemporary ménage a trois. A lot of authors have done it and done it well. Maya Banks springs to mind. Love her books. What are some of your favorite ménage a trois books?

N.J. has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.

I love reading all your menages...especially the Tapestries series. I agree, Maya Banks is another one who writes great ones...and I just recently read one by Lauren Dane...Laid Bare.
Great post NJ...I have bought but not had a chance to read your entire Tapestry collection. One of my favorite menage stories is a little older ..it's from 2008 and is a scifi/fantasy book by Thoelyn Boese called "Daughter's of Terra- The Ta’e’sha Chronicles 1". I love it. I also love Maya Banks books.
Thanks so much, Kara. :-)
And I do enjoy Lauren Dane's books! She's a fabulous writer.
Thanks, Maria. I hope you enjoy the series. I'm not familiar with Thoelyn Boese, but I do enjoy Maya Banks.
