Reading is like writing: You can do it just about anywhere, but the outcome becomes optimum if you have the write spot.
I’d always dreamed of having a home office, one where I could (escape) nestle into my creativity and write like a maniac. About six years ago, while doing a remodel, we designed a small office space for me, going as far as measuring out where to place a desk and having one built for the specifications.
Perfect, right? Wrong. A year later I took a “Feng Shui for Creativity” class online, which I recommend for those writer-types if you ever have the chance, and one of the first MAJOR rules is not to sit with your back to the door. Guess how my office is situated? Yep.
As I explore concepts such as serial killings and lurking of all things paranormal, the entire empty household rests at my back. It feels like someone or something peers at me, and I constantly need to turn around and check. Maybe it’s good for inspiration into the unknown but it’s not good for my writing-nerves.
I’ve found, though, that what I’m writing often dictates a different writing spot. Delving into a hot & heavy erotic scene, well, the perfect place is bed, why not? With one of my pregnancies, I bought a support back/chair for the bed, and despite my husband’s continued attempts to trash it, I use it. It’s a great way to get away from the feeling of the office or the distractions of the mini-desk in the livingroom (my other work spot).
So tell me – if you’re a writer, where do you like to write, and where do you actually do the most work? And, if you’re a reader, what’s your most comfortable spot? The place that you go when you really want to do some serious reading?
