How comfortable are you discussing sex? Reading about it? Writing about it?
On May 16, I’ll be teaching an Online course through OCC/RWA on “Some Like It Hot – Writing the Erotic Romance.” Earlier this year, I taught a similar course through SavvyAuthors, and we had a great mix of new and established authors. From those who wrote traditional m/f (male/female) erotic romance to those who focused on lesbian fiction.
The OCC/RWA course will look more at crafting those hot and spicy scenes. I’ve worked with all different types of writers – form those who blush at the thought of ever writing that type of fiction to those who have a harder time writing the material around the sex scenes.
Now matter where you are as a writer, or a fledgling writer, it’s a great way to look at the chemistry between the characters.
In my latest novel The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Threesome the balance became even more important. When it comes to writing a ménage story, the key is to show why the “non-traditional” coupling works. (Can “coupling,” which implies two people work for a threesome?) Usually, in such books, there’s an already established couple, and a third person comes into the relationship. So, what makes the current couple work … and what does the third person bring to the bedroom?
In The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Threesome, the story opens with Lawrence, a vampire, and Trevor, a werewolf, as an item. Then Lily enters the story. She’s experiencing some sort of weird paranormal phenomenon, and she seeks out Lawrence and Trevor for help. They all receive more than they expected.

During RWA Nationals – the last week of June in New York – Ravenous Romance has invited me to read during their monthly Ravenous Nights, Happy Endings. So while I’ve grown used to writing about those steamy scenes, I’m going to have to start practicing reading the words aloud!
Any advice?

Hi Louisa! Wish I could attend your class. I write steamy but I'm always looking for ways to improve. Good luck with the seminar!
